over 3 yearsJoey Chestnut's World Record Pie Eating Competition.
BUENA PARK – There’s a reason why his nickname is Joey Jaws.
Joey Chestnut, a 32-year-old from San Jose, devoured 14.5 pounds of boysenberry pies in eight minutes on Saturday – setting a world reco rd at the World Boysenberry Pie Eating Championship at Knott’s Berry Farm.
"I feel really good, awesome," Chestnut said. "The key was building tolerance for the pie."
For months, Chestnut had prepared for the competition by buying boxes of frozen mixed-berry pies, warming them up and eating them while on the clock.
The second-ever competition kicked off the theme park’s annual Boysenberry Festival, a 16-day party celebrating the hybrid fruit that started Knott’s. It’s also the second Boysenberry Pie Eating title for Chestnut. Last year, he consumed 14 pounds.
On Saturday, in front of a raucous crowd near the Calico Courthouse, Chestnut defeated 11 other competitors in a messy battle.
Competitors stuffed their mouths by the handfuls, with the dark reddish-blue filling splashed across their faces and spilling onto their white shirts.
Chestnut received a boysenberry-pie-shaped trophy and $2,000. Steve Hendry, 31, of Dixon ate 10.25 pounds and received $1,000 for second place. Miki Sudo, 30, of New York came in third at 9.5 pounds.
Chestnut came in ranked the No. 2 competitive eater in the world by Major League Eating, which sanctions competitive events such as Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, where Chestnut gained fame by winning eight titles before being upset last July 4.
